Teachers! Because Some Parents Suck.

Wow! Can I just say 20/21 is going to be one hell of a school year?! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, because… America! But believe me when I say, I understand all the sides:

  • Moms who’s child is a kinetic learner and needs to be in the classroom; I hear you.

  • Teachers who are concerned for their health when returning to work; I hear you.

  • Dads who’s child is immunocompromised but needs to be in school for financial reasons; I hear you.

  • Administrators who are trying to keep your students and staff safe while trying to give some sense of normalcy; I hear you.

I hope that everyone can agree with me on the above. These are general concepts that most are dealing with; but let’s talk about the few. In every city across America, there is a student that is not only longing to be back in the classroom but is safer there.

Fun Fact: I was a teacher! I taught 6th grade Social Studies.

Different profession… same flair for accessories! 😂

I was fresh out of college and sometimes mistaken in the hall for a student. Literally, some kid pushed me from behind. When I whipped around, his face went ghost white and he apologized “I’m sorry, Ms. Pogue. I thought you were a kid”. To which I promptly gave him detention because… “Why were you pushing anyone in the first place?!”

Although I was young, I knew that my students needed structure and discipline... Especially at this trying age (y’all 6th grade is whack). Obviously, I did not make teaching my lifelong profession, but there are lessons learned that will be a part of me forever.

Two stories always come to mind when I think back on teaching. Both of which are important to highlight in our current situation.

A very challenging student was assigned to my “homeroom”, meaning I spent more time with her in my classroom than most. She was loud, disruptive, and argumentative. She craved attention from her peers, and even more from an authoritative figure. Eventually, I was able to speak her language and help her to succeed in the classroom. I’ll never forget at the end of the year when she said “I wish you were my mom.” because I had multiple conferences with her mom; and I don’t blame her for wanting better.

Another student presented in the exact opposite way. She was quiet, small, meek but very smart. Always on time and received good grades. But there was something off. Her silence wasn’t natural, but fearful. I remember we heard rumors that there was abuse at home. These aren’t things that are taken lightly; and after missing two days of school our team called DCF… and I called my dad. Almost 10 hours away. I implored that he and my (slightly taller) uncle drive up to save this little girl, vigilante style. DCF & the local police were more than equipped and effective, but I couldn’t stand by and do nothing.

That is the heart of a teacher. The people who care about the children that aren’t cared for. The people that care about the children that are cared for. They don’t see race, gender, or poverty. They just see a child with potential and opportunity.

This is why I believe in taking care of our teachers. This is why I believe that teachers should be paid the same as doctors and lawyers; they are responsible for our future.

If you’re able to transition to this COVID school year with little disruption; I hear you.

But I would be remiss if I didn’t shed light on the fact that it will not be an easy transition for all. In fact, many students will regress. This will weigh heavily on their teachers, I know from experience. And for that… teachers need the happy things!
